SUMMARY:Discovery Day: Corals of the Gulf
DESCRIPTION:What lies beneath the surface of the Gulf?\nDiscover an incredible underwater world during the Texas Maritime Museum’s upcoming Discovery Day: Corals of the Gulf\, a free\, family-friendly come-and-go program at the Texas Maritime Museum on Saturday\, August 15\, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. \nJoin educators from Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary\, home to spectacular coral reefs located about 100 miles off the Texas coast\, for an engaging afternoon of hands-on exploration. Through interactive activities\, fascinating specimen samples\, and captivating videos\, you’ll discover what corals really are\, how they build thriving reef communities\, the surprising creatures that depend on them\, and the challenges these remarkable ecosystems face. You’ll also get a behind-the-scenes look at how scientists monitor coral reefs over time to better understand and protect these underwater treasures. \nCoral reefs are much more than beautiful underwater landscapes; they are an important part of the Gulf’s maritime environment. They provide habitat for countless marine species\, support healthy fisheries\, and have influenced navigation\, exploration\, and scientific discovery throughout the Gulf for generations. By learning about these living reefs\, we gain a deeper appreciation for the waters that have shaped Texas’ maritime heritage. \nWhether you’re a curious child\, an aspiring marine biologist\, or simply someone who loves the Gulf\, this program offers something for everyone. Drop in for Discovery Day: Corals of the Gulf anytime between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.\, explore at your own pace\, ask questions\, and experience one of Texas’ most extraordinary natural wonders without getting your feet wet. \nThere is no charge for admission (though donations are gratefully accepted)\, and all ages are welcome. Bring the whole family and discover the vibrant world hidden beneath the waves! \nView all upcoming museum events to see what else is happening at the Texas Maritime Museum. \nStay Connected \nDon’t miss future family programs\, educational workshops\, and special events. SUMMARY:War & Peace on the Rio Grande\, 1861–1867
DESCRIPTION:Along the banks of the Rio Grande\, a hidden chapter of the Civil War unfolded. \nThis spring\, the Texas Maritime Museum invites you to step into a world shaped by conflict\, resilience\, and transformation with the opening of War & Peace on the Rio Grande\, 1861–1867. Arriving April 23\, 2026\, in the museum’s main gallery\, this extraordinary traveling exhibit will transport visitors to a pivotal moment in history\, where the currents of the U.S. Civil War reached far beyond the battlefield and into the heart of the U.S.–Mexico borderlands. \nDeveloped by the Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools (CHAPS) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley\, this immersive exhibit brings together groundbreaking research and engaging displays to illuminate the complex social\, political\, and economic forces that defined the region during this turbulent era. \nVisitors will discover how the Civil War reshaped cross-border commerce and trade\, influenced delicate political relationships between the United States and Mexico\, and relied on the courage and contributions of soldiers of color stationed along the Rio Grande. Through vivid depictions of daily camp life\, the exhibit offers an intimate\, human perspective\, revealing the lived experiences of those who served in a landscape marked by uncertainty and change. \nOn view throughout the summer season\, during regular Museum operating hours\, Tuesdays – Saturdays from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM\, War & Peace on the Rio Grande\, 1861–1867\, is more than an exhibit; it is an invitation to explore a border not just of land\, but of history\, identity\, and enduring legacy. \nView all upcoming museum events to see what else is happening at the Texas Maritime Museum. \nStay Connected \nDon’t miss future family programs\, educational workshops\, and special events. SUMMARY:Painting History: A Guided Plein Air Art Program
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, artists have helped record the story of life on the water. Long before photography\, painters captured the ships\, harbors\, weather\, and working waterfronts that shaped maritime communities. Their brushstrokes preserved moments in time\, documenting the people\, vessels\, and landscapes that defined Texas maritime history. \nThis spring\, you’re invited to continue that tradition. \nJoin us for Painting History\, a guided plein air art program set against the inspiring backdrop of the waterfront. Led by an experienced artist instructor\, Donna Lee Nyzio \, this relaxed outdoor session invites participants of all skill levels to paint the harbor and surrounding scenery by the Texas Maritime Museum while learning techniques for capturing light\, atmosphere\, and maritime subjects. \nWhether you’re picking up a paintbrush for the first time or looking to deepen your artistic practice\, this program offers a welcoming environment to slow down\, observe the waterfront\, and create your own visual record of the harbor today using your own materials and preferred mediums. \nJust as artists of the past documented the maritime world around them\, participants in this program will help capture the harbor as it exists now\, creating a new chapter in the visual story of our coastal community. \nAll experience levels are welcome. \nDate: Thursday\, April 16th \nTime: 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM \nLocation: Texas Maritime Museum\, 1202 Navigation Circle\, Rockport\, TX 78382 \nCost: $45 \nRegister here. \nSpace is limited. Advance registration is required. Bottled water will be provided\, and restrooms will be available. In the event of poor weather\, the session will be moved inside the museum. No refunds unless the class is canceled. \nCome paint the harbor\, and become part of the story. \nSuggested Supplies \nParticipants are welcome to bring the art materials they are most comfortable using. For outdoor painting\, the following basic supplies are recommended: \n\nPortable easel or drawing board\nCanvas\, paper\, or sketchbook\nPaints (oil\, acrylic\, or watercolor)\nBrushes or painting tools\nPalette for mixing colors\nWater container or solvent (as appropriate for your medium)\nPaper towels or rags\nPencil for sketching\nChair or stool (optional)\nHat\, sunscreen\, and water for comfort outdoors\n\nNote: Participants are responsible for bringing their own materials. \nView all upcoming museum events to see what else is happening at the Texas Maritime Museum. \nStay Connected \nDon’t miss future family programs\, educational workshops\, and special events.
