Rockport, TX, May 17, 2024 — The Texas Maritime Museum is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Ables as its new Executive Director, effective May 1, 2024. Michael brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for museum management and maritime history, making him an invaluable addition to our institution.

Michael and his family join us from the Harry S. Truman Foundation in Key West, Florida, where he served as Deputy Director. Returning to Texas is a homecoming for the Ables family, as Michael hails from Cedar Hill, Texas, and his wife Nikki from Stamford, Texas. Michael holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art History and a Master’s in Museum Studies from Wichita State University. Michael, Nikki, and their children, Astrea (14) and McKinley (3) are eager to join the Rockport-Fulton community.

Michael’s career is marked by significant achievements and leadership roles in renowned museums and non-profits. His previous positions include management roles at the National WASP WWII Museum in Sweetwater, TX, the General Patton Memorial Museum in California, the Reno County Historical Society, and Strataca, a History and Natural Science Museum. With more than 12 years of executive leadership experience, Michael has successfully secured $5+ million in grants and raised more than double that in capital campaign funds. He has also spearheaded three major building projects and restored military tanks to operational standards through interagency Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs).

“I am excited to be back home and working with such an amazing organization!” said Michael. “I look forward to what we will accomplish together with my new staff, the Board, and community members. I can’t wait!”

The Texas Maritime Museum officially opened on July 1, 1989; the museum has a storied history dedicated to Texas maritime history, preservation, and education. The museum was designated as the official Maritime Museum of Texas by the Texas Legislature in 1987 and reaffirmed in 2007. The museum is also accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

We invite the community to visit the museum and extend a warm welcome to Michael as he begins this exciting new chapter with us.
